China as Method: Research and Writing about China Today

The Long Institute supports work by local faculty and affiliates who have already begun to write for a broad public. We sponsor workshops and webinars that provide graduate students and professors the skills they need to communicate in more accessible ways.

Key activities include:
  • Bringing high-profile journalists to campus. Past visitors have included Ian Johnson, Barbara Demick, Peter Hessler, Christina Larson, Leta Hong Fincher, and Evan Osnos.
  • Working with The Forum for the Academy and the Public, an organization at UC Irvine dedicated to putting academics in conversation with the general public.
  • Sponsoring and collaborating with the Los Angeles Review of Books' China Channel
  • Holding a yearly Summer Institute intended for graduate students working on Chinese studies.
